The Wanstead Flats history group are researching aspects of the history of this green space on Newham’s borders.
Their latest project is looking at the use of the Flats for political and religious meetings. We have found a lot of references to meetings from the late 19th century to World War II, but after 1945 there seem to have been fewer such gatherings.
They do know that at least one religious group held tented missions on the Flats (near Dames Road) in the 1970s. They are appealing for help from anyone with memories religious or political meetings on the Flats. Any memories you have would be welcome!
You can leave any comments here or on the Heritage Newham – People, Places, Progress and we will pass onto the history group.
Or if you would prefer, email your thoughts to the group by sending them to email@example.com
